What to Pack & How to Get Here

Neither the building management nor The Washington Center has enough storage space to hold all the packages students may want to send before their arrival. Changes in air travel can make it difficult to fly with a large number of suitcases. Here are some suggestions that might help in planning which items you bring on the plane and which items to have family or friends ship after your arrival. Remember that you will be responsible for replacement of all paper products (tissues, napkins, toilet paper).

Items to Bring With You

  • Casual attire
  • Business attire
  • Towels
  • Twin-long size linens - linens are not provided
  • Comforter/blanket and pillows - linens are not provided
  • Hair dryer and/or curling iron
  • Toiletries
  • Cosmetics
  • Umbrella
  • Key chain (for apartment key)
  • Backpack or briefcase
  • Credit card/debit card and ID
  • Computer
  • Alarm clock

Items to Ship or Purchase After You Arrive

  • Formal attire
  • Additional casual attire
  • Additional business attire
  • Additional towels or linens
  • Hangers
  • Planner/calendar
  • Laundry supplies
  • Dish washing supplies and other cleaning supplies
  • Extra lamp/reading lamp
  • Extension cords
  • Surge protectors
  • Supplies for your course - notebook and course materials
  • First aid kit

Items to Leave at Home

The following items will be provided by The Washington Center, so you do not need to bring them with you.

  • Iron and Ironing Board
  • Dishes
  • Cutlery
  • Pots and Pans
  • Microwave- all apartments have fully equipped kitchens
  • Toaster
  • All furniture

Transportation from the Airport


Door-to-door service from Washington Dulles International, Reagan National and Baltimore Washington International Airports. Call 24 hours in advance for reservations at (800) 258-3826.

Provides Metrorail and bus service throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. Call (202) 637-7000 for more information on bus/rail routing, schedules, parking and more.

Metro bus service is also available from Baltimore Washington International airport to the Greenbelt Metro station and from Washington Dulles International Airport to the Rosslyn Metro station. These services should only be used if you have a small amount of luggage.
