Federal Diversity Internship Initiative

Join students from a wide variety of backgrounds, exploring potential careers with select U.S. federal agencies. In this highly selective program, you'll get first-hand insight into working for the federal government, gain valuable professional experience and build a network of fellow public servants.
In partnership with multiple U.S. federal agencies, this program will give you the opportunity to experience what it's like working for the U.S. government.
This is a highly selective program. To be eligible to participate, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (visit https://www.ed.gov/accreditation to verify your school and/or program of study).
- Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.
- Have a strong interest in working with the federal government.
- Be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship.
During this 10-week (summer) or 15-week (fall or spring) program, you'll be immersed in a full-time federal work environment five days a week, assisting with projects and performing tasks that your internship mentor assigns. Your internship placement may be in the Washington, D.C. area, or in one of several regional locations across the United States, where our federal partner agencies have availability and internships that fit your skills, interests and career objectives.
This is a fully funded program sponsored by multiple U.S. federal government agencies. Sponsorship covers the cost of the program, housing (if needed) and roundtrip travel to and from the internship site city. You will be responsible for living expenses and local transportation. However, a stipend will be provided to help alleviate these expenses.
Housing and Living
Fully-furnished housing is provided by TWC for all participants who need it. Housing is arranged in close proximity to internship sites, both in Washington, D.C. and in regional locations across the United States. Housing accommodations can, and typically do, require shared-living arrangements with other interns. Every effort is made to arrange housing near essential amenities like grocery stores, public transit and medical facilities.
You may be eligible to receive academic credit for your participation in this program. However, credits are determined and awarded by each university. TWC does not grant credit. You are responsible for arranging any academic credit through your college or university. You should discuss arrangements with you institution, prior to starting the program.

How to Apply
Start and submit the online application by clicking the button below. Throughout the process, you can save your application and return to it at a later time. You must include the application documents listed in the section below to complete the application process.
You need to submit the following documents along with your application:
- One-page Resumé
- Statement of Professional Interest: please address your desire to work for the federal government
- Official Transcripts
- Two Letters of Recommendation: one must be from a professor
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (optional)
How does the referral process work?
Upon submission of a complete application, your resume will be considered for referral to a variety of Federal Agencies based on availability of positions each term. Before a referral is made, we'll contact you to confirm your availability, eligibility and interest in being referred for a position. Upon your referral to an agency, you may hear from them anytime from that point up until the beginning of the semester. Unfortunately, there is no fixed acceptance timeline for the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative referral process, since it varies based on each agency’s processes and timelines. If you are tentatively offered a position and accept, a basic security investigation is then completed by the federal agency before formally offering you the position.
TWC notifies applicants once all positions for a given term are filled. However, due to the staggered timelines with each agency, we are often unable to send that notification before the start date for the program.
Where are the internships located?
While many of our positions are located in D.C., quite a few are dispersed regionally throughout the U.S. Individual agencies will share location details at the time of an interview and/or offer, should you be considered.
Do I have to use the housing provided by The Washington Center?
No. You can commute from home, stay with someone you know in the area, or find your own housing. Please keep in mind that The Washington Center will cover the cost of housing if you choose to use its services (but not otherwise).
Are former interns more successful applying for jobs with their host agency after graduation?
Many of our partner agencies use internships as a means for development of a talent pipeline for federal employment. This means that you’ll gain hands-on experience and knowledge about the agency that could give you a boost when applying for a job. We also provide professional programing during your internship, which will give you helpful insight into the sector and the federal job application process.
Can I apply for the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative multiple times?
Yes. The application allows you to indicate interest in future terms (in the event your initial application is not successful). We will invite well-qualified applicants to advance their applications and explain the process at that time. If your application is converted, there will be no need to reapply; you may need to provide updated materials.
Am I allowed to take classes from my home institution during the internship?
It is not recommended. Please keep in mind that this internship will resemble a full time job, where you will be working 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is also no guarantee that your internship placement will be near your school.
