The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) welcomed nearly 500 interns to Washington, D.C. during their two-day fall orientation on August 30th and 31st at the Residential and Academic Facility (RAF). The first day kicked off with the interns being formally introduced to their TWC program advisors and participating in program activities such as a U.S. Capitol tour and National Portrait Gallery exhibit. This summer over 50 TWC students reached out to immigrants in the metropolitan Washington area tutoring young Ethiopians and Latinos, helping Latin American domestic violence victims obtain visas and volunteering at a Hispanic festival. They were all participants of the Immigrant Rights Civic Engagement project. The Homelessness Civic Engagement Project welcomed the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) to TWC's Residential Academic Facility on July 9th. NCH discussed attacks on the homeless throughout the United States and encouraged students to support H.R. 3528, also known as the Hate Crimes Statistics Act, which would include attacks against the homeless as a hate crime. | View Full Article

As part of the advocacy component of the Torture Abolition Civic Engagement Project, 40 TWC summer interns and 10 torture survivors spoke out against torture on Capitol Hill. The Torture Abolition Civic Engagement Project is organized by The Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition (TASSC). TASSC is the only organization founded by and for torture survivors to end torture and empower survivors and their communities.
