More than 40 students in the Animal Welfare Civic Engagement Project heard from the Humane Society of the United States regarding how to advocate for public policies that combat animal cruelty and protect dogs, cats, horses and other animals. The Humane Society, the country’s largest animal protection organization, fights “cruelty, exploitation, and neglect” of animals through legislation, rescues thousands of animals, and works with businesses to support animal-friendly policies. | View Full Article
Veterans Civic Engagement students outdid themselves this semester, setting an example for how civilians throughout the U.S. can thank “our heroes” for their service. More than 60 students participated in a race organized by our partner organization, Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) at 1:50 AM in Bethesda. An estimated 34 million people are living with HIV or AIDS, with a large number of this population residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. In an effort to help battle this deadly disease, TWC’s LGBTQA Civic Engagement Project raised over $600 for the Whitman Walker Health’s AIDS Walk. On September 22nd, students went to Brier's Mill Run in Riverdale, Maryland to remove trash and debris that pollute the nearby streams. This fall TWC launched their new Domestic Violence Fall 2012 Civic Engagement Project in partnership with the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), a highly-respected social change organization dedicated to creating an environment where violence against women no longer exists.
