I Love Baseball; No Ifs, Ands, or Bunts

For as long as I can remember, attending Tampa Bay Rays games has been a summer ritual. While filling this summer with Washington Nationals games has been fun, I’ve missed my home team. Thankfully, this past Friday, I had the opportunity to travel over to Baltimore to find a little taste of home.

After a short MARC train ride from Union Station to Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), I arrived at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. A sea of orange and black shirts surrounded me as I walked toward the enormous brick stadium. It was exhilarating to be the only Rays fan in sight, though a little uncomfortable to be clapping by myself when my team did well. Nonetheless, I had an incredible time watching an exciting baseball game and ultimately, seeing the Rays comeback to win in extra innings.

The Orioles vs. Rays game on Friday was so much more than just a baseball game; it was a piece of home and a reminder of the incredible opportunities I have had this summer. Though this summer has been an absolute dream, sometimes I miss St. Petersburg, Florida. I miss soaking up the sun at the beach, jogging along the waterfront downtown, and cheering on the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. A few months ago, I never would have expected to watch my favorite baseball team play in Baltimore, Maryland with one of my new best friends.

If you’re a baseball fan, I highly encourage you to check out the Washington Nationals (National League) or Baltimore Orioles (American League) schedules. You never know - one of these teams could be hosting your hometown team while you're in D.C. It’s an interesting experience attending an away baseball game, an experience everyone should partake in at least once.

Ciao for now,

Emily Pingleton
