Sooo...what do you do in your free time? PARTY!
One thing that I have failed to mention throughout my time ranting on this lovely blog is the nightlife of DC. I typically am not a nightlife person while at school at Tennessee State University. After all, I've had my share of parties and I've pretty much enjoyed it all. But hey, I'm here in DC so I figured I would indulge in it just a little bit. So far I have ventured out to a number of bars. Bars are the thing in DC. Filled with tons of young professionals seeking to enjoy time with their collegues outside of work, bars provide a wonderful networking opportunity both professionally and personally. I also have been to only one nightclub since I have been out here, although many of the bars have a sizable space for dancing should you want to step out and rock to the beat! I made the huge mistake in thinking that being at TWC I was going to be surrounded by a bunch of nerdy pre-young professionals who only study study study...WRONG! Just about everyone here loves to have a good time. Most everyone here is 21 or older and therefore are able to enjoy a great night out on the town for relatively cheap. Those who are under 21 may not be able to go everywhere, but they too have have a great time in DC.
Adams Morgan is full of bars and places where young people congregate on the weekends. There is always something interesting going on there. TONS of bars within walking distance of each other. We ventured out there this Friday and bar hopped. We visited around 4 or 5 bars, each packed with more and more people, and more and more interesting sights that may not be appropriate for mention on this forum :). Anyway, we ended up spending a good amount of time at a hookah bar. I LOVE hookah bars by the way. Such a chill environment to go to enjoy with friends and good company.

I have also been to a nice venue, Ultrabar! This place is bigger than it appears to be. It appears to be just a hole in the wall club/bar, but it actually boasts four floors, all with a decent amount of space to enjoy music and vibe out and dance! And it is a beautiful place! I have been out to Ultrabar twice, with two different sets of friends and had fun each time. Not to mention, for my 21+ year old readers, there is an open bar from 9-10 which is wonderful for those of you who like to drink. I'm not a big drinker myself, but it satisfies my friends.

My friend Jenny just turned 21. She was pretty excited about it :)
Prime example as to why networking truly works! One of the interns here at TWC actually ran into a club promoter on the streets of DC. They started chatting it up and then all of a sudden all of us who are in TWC are able to enjoy deals when it comes to the nightlife events that he throws! The two times I have been to Ultrabar I have never had to pay. They have a lot of great stuff going on outside of nightlife as well. In a few weeks they are planning on heading up to a ski resort for a day trip for interns for a discounted price.
I love working in DC, but it is also great to just kick back, unwind and enjoy time with friends outside of work or professional development.
What's Next?
My next couple of events that I am going to venture out to include a spoken word cafe and a Wizards basketball game. I am a huge spoken word fan. Although I cannot comtemplate using my mind to manipulate my words to articulate any particular thought (that was a pretty good attempt at some rhymes eh?), I admire the art of those who can. There are a number of hot spots to venture out to here in DC for those interested in that type of thing. Not sure where I will venture to yet. Next on my list is a Wizards basketball game. They suck, but hey, it's still an NBA game. In fact, they suck so bad this year, that a short time after I first got to DC, they were playing against the Celtics. You could actually hear the crazy cheering of the Celtics fans as they poured into the Wizards stadium. The Wizards fans shrunk back, ashamed. Funny thing is, the Wizards actually won that game. Nonetheless, the moral of that story...the Wizards suck! But I am still going to a game!
How could I forget?! SALSA class! A group of my friends participated in a salsa class at a nice restuarant/club two weeks ago. Unfortunately I was unable to make it, but it will definitely be something put on my weekly calendar. It's FREE and full of people who lack the capacity to twist their hips in a fluid enough motion to be called salsa, much like myself. FUN!
