International Festival
Where were you last night? If you were in D.C you could’ve been at some club in Georgetown letting the 808 beats hit you as you moved melodically with the speakers pumping the newest song. Or you even could have been at Kevin Hart's show rolling on the floor watching his face contort as he makes fun of the YouTube wonder boy 50 Tyson. All those options are good and fun, and I’m sure a lot of Washingtonians paid their hard-earned money to take advantage of them. But me? I was busy. Why? Guess.
No, it wasn’t the pile of homework staring at me with its set of big googly eyes like the money from the Geico commercials. No, it wasn’t the LSAT books sending me constant mental text messages displaying, “ILY. Don’t put mi off til l8r!!” Nope, I wasn't doing homework or studying for the LSAT. I was too busy in P1 (the basement of TWC's RAF) dancing to the hype Puerto Rican Drums and singing the Belgium version of Justin Timberlake’s “My Love”. This is all due to TWC's Student Life staff (and Chris Mason's incessant e-mailing reminding us to come out and show support--and in the process have a cultural experience.
So, the evening started out with me doing just that...simply stopping by to support my two wonderful roommates Hyeji and Elisheba (from the respective countries of The Republic of South Korea and Chiapas, Mexico) and all of the friends I have made through them. But then I saw that everyone had nametags with very different symbols. So I tracked down my first roommate's country and had my name written in Korean!

Then I smelled wonderful food from Mexico, which is how I found my second roommate. I ate some wonderful guacamole and taquitos prepared my friend, Yoali Riquelme. I then took a visit to China, Canada and Vietnam, where I admired a wonderful one stringed instrument from Vietnam named a Monochord but dubbed just “one-string instrument” by the students from Vietnam. I then saluted a “Mountie” from Canada, which is the nickname for their law enforcement officers. Around this time, I heard thudding and rhythm coming from next door. Before I entered the next room, I saw a big flag from Puerto Rico...and then a circle of dancing drums!! So, then, I just had to stay. The festivities included great food catered by TWC, and a great DJ! Here are a couple of photos from that night, and some quotes to go with them!

The Countries

Canada, "Our police are called, Mounties!"

Bolivia, "Invest in Bolivia!!!"

The Republic of South Korea,"That flag does not represent Korea. Korea is global!"

Puerto Rico, "We have the heart of a native, the spirt of a latino and the strength of black man! Come to Puerto Rico!'

Brazil-"We are going to do this differently. We are going to play trivia and you can win some prizes." Everyone in the room then searched for Brazilian facts on their Smartphones.

India-"We have over a billion people! We don't think it's a problem, though. And over half of them are under the age of 26!"

China - "How many people are from Shanghi?!" 20 people start cheering!

Russia, "I'm from the Asian part of Russia and she is from the Europian part." I didn't even know Russia is by an Asian country?!?!?!

Japan- "We weren't really prepared to say anything... But that camera is from Japan and we are from Japan." Crowd cheers at Osamu!! He's honest!!

Belgium,"Who's been to Belguim?!"

Colombia (Sorry for the bad picture!) - "We are known for being hospitable people. We are the home of (lists a lot of famous Colombian athletes and singers)....Shakira..." The crowd erupted!!!

South Africa and Botswana -"Everyone hears my accent, and they think I'm what? Crowd, "Australian!!" "Well, I HATE AUSTRALIA! And I'm joined here by my friend who is not technically from South Africa but Botswana!"

Vietnam - "We have an instrument that is called...........umm............the one-stringed instrument from Vietnam."

One-stringed instrument from Vietnam
