4 Tips to Finish The Semester Strong

If you are thinking that participating in The Washington Center’s academic internship program means that your main focus is the internship and you won’t have to worry about classes, you might want to think again.


The evening course and LEAD Colloquium are part of the program and contribute to your overall grade. And beware, because most of the evening courses have final exams. These past two weeks have been quite stressful for me because of increasingly intense workload and academic duties. During these unpleasant days, I have learned a couple tips that might be useful for future participants of TWC and I’d like to share them with you.


1. Plan things out

Take a look at the syllabus of the class you take, and map out the workload for the semester. It is easier to do this at the beginning of the semester when things are low-key and not too stressful. Once you have an idea of what you’ll have to do throughout the semester, it will be easier to keep track of your assignments and work on them accordingly, so you won’t have to cram everything at the end (like I do).


2. Make a priority list

When you have multiple things on your plate, it may be wise to start prioritizing. Making a list of things to do and ranking their importance level will help you decide which task you should tackle first. My experience at TWC has shown me that there were days when I barely had anything to do, and there were days that I literally had all the deadlines that I needed to finish. There was no in between. Keeping a priority list will help you keep track of the order of your work. I tried it, and it helped me. Worth a try!

3. Take small breaks, let your brain relax

It’s common that when we handle multiple tasks, we tend to push through and finish a big chunk of a lot of things. However, after that, our brains are fried. I’ve learned that taking small breaks in between tasks not only helps you relax, but it also helps you work longer hours without getting burned out. On days like today, when everything is due tomorrow and I know that I’ll be working for many more hours, I plan on taking a break every hour or so to keep my head clear and my brain not overworked.


4. Deep breaths, everything will be okay

I’m not going to lie, I have had some minor breakdowns during this past week because of all the stress I’m carrying on my shoulders. But I realized that as seniors, other people are probably going through the same thing as I am. I tried distracting myself from the stress by reading motivational quotes. I found one quite interesting: “A year from now, everything you are worried about will mean nothing.”  It is hard to keep a rational mind when you are stressed out; however, keeping a positive attitude is crucial during the tough days. It sounds cliché but it’s true every time: Everything will be okay, so take it one day at a time.
