The Legacy of Service: Fatherhood - Past, Present, and Future

The Legacy of Service: Fatherhood - Past, Present, and Future

With the passing of each Father’s Day, I am reminded of how important it is to have positive male role models in my life. For this entry, I am going to get a little personal by writing an open letter to my grandfather, father, and son.

Chaze Patrick Fathers Day

Note to my grandfather

Dear Granddaddy,

I miss you. There isn’t a year that passes by when you are not in my thoughts. It has been almost 20 years since we had to say farewell for your homecoming. I can still remember all of the great memories we had in my youth. One memory that I can recall is when you took me to Las Vegas. I was so overwhelmed with anxiety and excitement, when you touch my head and said,”You have no need to be scared. I will always be here to protect and guide you.” It was only a few years later that you were called home. Throughout the years, I went through life and felt that you were still by my side. Even when I joined the Marine Corps and had a little self-doubt, I felt the presence of your comfort, and protection which helped me to complete my time in the service as you had done in your life. I love you granddad, and I will see you when my mission has been completed here on earth.

Note to my Father

Dear Dad,

Thank you for molding me into the man I am today, and providing me with tremendous guidance in my life. You have always been there to provide me with motivation whenever I needed it. When I was younger, I remember when I had alot difficulty in learning how to ride a bike. We were working together in the Windy City (Chicago) heat in order for me to successfully ride a bike. Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. However, we prevailed and now I can ride a bike with ease (most days). When I enlisted in the Marine Corps., I remember your exact words, “Be the best you can be no matter what!” These words had such an impact on me, and still do today! I love you dad and see you when I return home.

Note to my son

The men who were significant in my development influenced my role as your dad. I have come to appreciate every day that I here on earth because I’m given a chance to be a better person and father to you. I am here to pick you up when you fall, support and love you unconditionally, and raise you to become a man of great knowledge, exceptional character, and integrity. Please know that I am always here when you need me. I love you my son and I can’t wait to see you when I return home.

Happy Fathers Day

The connection between military service and fatherhood has been strongly evident in my life. My greatest blessing is being a father and I look forward to the journey. As time goes on, it is my hopes that I will have the priveldge of being a grandfather and maybe a great-grandfather. Happy Father's Day to all the awesome great-grandfathers, grandfathers, and fathers!

Your Marine,

Chaze Patrick
