The Solution to Becoming a Better Leader & Communicator: Toastmasters International

Communication is an important skill that can be constantly developed over a lifetime and I have made it my lifelong commitment to improving my communication skills. Toastmasters has provided me with this opportunity. Toastmasters International is an organization that aims to help people enhance their communication and leadership skills. Here are three benefits to being a Toastmaster:

Structured Pathways to Success

Toastmasters has two pathways for development: the communication track and leadership track.

The communication pathway focuses on the completion of speeches in areas such as informative speeches, public relations, and many others. The leadership pathway enhances your leadership skillsets by serving a leadership role in a Toastmasters meeting. For example, the Toastmaster of the day serves as the person who structures and facilitates the meeting. Each successive position you serve, you obtain credit within Toastmasters leading to you to becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).

International Connections

Toastmasters is an international organization. There are over 15,900 clubs in 142 countries. No matter where you may go; a Toastmasters club is typically close by. Since I’m currently in the Washington, D.C. area, I wanted to explore the clubs in this area by using the club finder:

Just input your location and you will be provided with an extensive listing of results such as the club name, address, meeting time, and if they are an open or restricted club. Tip: open clubs are open to the public and restricted clubs have specific requirements for membership.

The Interconnection of Learning and Fun

Toastmasters gives you the opportunity to develop your creativity. I am currently working to complete the Storytelling manual which is one of the many Advanced Communication manuals you can do that will help you develop your communication skills in creative and entertaining ways. Check out my speech as I play the prince from Cinderella:

Toastmasters has provided me with the tools for success and confidence in my networking in DC. I have deemed myself a Toastmaster for life because strong communication and leadership skills carry you across the lifetime. If you haven’t had a chance to experience a Toastmasters club, I would encourage you to give it a try. You never know where it may take you in life.

Signing off!!!
