The Washington Center

Home Institution: Hendrix College

Internship Site: Democratic National Committee

Program: Politics and Public Policy

Last week was a flurry of activity as I tried to take on the one task everyone in Washington must face down at some point or another: figuring out the whole "networking" thing. What is networking? How does one go about forming and cultivating relationships with people that can advise you and help you along your career path? These are the challenges the Washington Center stresses over and over that students must confront. Thankfully, it ends up not being as intimidating as it seems.

What a week it's been in D.C.! Pope Francis has been the talk of the town ever since he arrived here for his first-ever visit to the United States. Streets have closed, security has been ratcheted up, and there has been a flood of visitors from all across the country and all across the world. It's a perfect reminder that Washington is the city on the world stage. When a dignitary visits America's capitol, it truly is headline news everywhere else. With all the attention paid to the Pope, little old me got into some excitement of my own.

The Perfect Place

Part of the point of spending an entire semester in Washington is to immerse myself in this city academically as well as personally. That has been incredibly easy given my academic coursework here at The Washington Center (TWC), as well as all of the exciting things that go on in this city. Both have allowed me to take advantage of the opportunities I have around me to learn more about the world in different ways.   Why Not Take the Opportunity?

Getting into the Swing of Things

This week will actually be my first full four-day work week since I arrived in Washington, and I am incredibly excited. From getting more and more used to D.C. to really getting started with my internship, I feel like this semester is about to kick into gear.   Working Hard While Hardly Working!

Exploration and Experiences

Hello! My name is Barrett Goodwin, and through this blog you'll be able to follow my adventures in Washington D.C. this fall. This is my first time in the District, which is a bit far from my hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas (the state that's in-between Missouri and Louisiana, for the many who may be curious). In Arkansas I study politics and history at Hendrix College, a small liberal-arts school in nearby Conway.
