Week 5: Work, Play, and Netflix... The Perfect Combination

Week 5: Work, Play, and Netflix... The Perfect Combination

This was probably one of the busiest weeks that I have had, so far as work goes. Imagine how the New York Stock Exchange floor is and then multiply that by 100. That is how our intern back room was last week. We have been working on analyzing the fiscal year budget for the past several weeks and had compiled all of our research into books thousands of pages long. Last week was so busy because we had to put all of the books together in hard copy form!! Thousands upon thousands of pages were printed, organized, bound, and mailed. The whole nine yards. The office even ran out of paper! But being the great group of interns that we are, we completed the project correctly and on time. So proud of us...

Not all of these books could be mailed, however. Some of them had to be dropped off with different offices in the Senate and House buildings, or at the Capitol. Lucky for me, I got to deliver some of the books to these places. I felt important because I got to go into the "Authorized Business Only" parts of the offices. #wemadeit. I was hoping to see some famous Congressman, but unfortunately all I got to see was this statue of a guy from Indiana.

This weekend I had the opportunity to go home to Cincinnati. Home of the Bearcats, and all the people who I hold near and dear to my heart. I spent the weekend seeing all of my best friends, hanging out with my fraternity brothers, and having some quality time with the girlfriend. It was a nice change of pace from the D.C. life. If you're from the Midwest like me, it is hard to get used to the fast-paced the life out here. Try comparing the roadrunner to Wile E. Coyote... the coyote can just never catch up.

Speaking of D.C. -- when you live here, you hear about this all the time. You see ads on the Metro for it. It is filmed here... yes, I'm talking about House of Cards, which came out this weekend. We were all thinking about it. Yes, I watched it. But no, I did not finish it. SO NO ONE SPOIL IT FOR ME! One of my favorite shows; highly recommended. Being in D.C., it is really interesting to see which sites are filmed.

Here's the trailer... Watch it. If you take up the show, make sure that you have some free time... Like a whole day.

The Real Washington

While that is how I spent most of my week, I have learned from being here that while in Washington you are always learning. You are always hearing the news first hand, everyone is involved in the political scene, and there are tons of free events to attend. On Tuesday I attended one of those events where I heard the former ambassador of Oman speak on Middle East foreign policy and other issues relating to the topic. Not only did I learn about the topic at hand, I realized that there is so much to know, so much to see, and so much opportunity to broaden your horizons in this city. You just have to find the opportunity.
