Officially an Alum of TWC

Sunday, May 03, 2015

On Friday, May 1, I became an official alumnus of The Washington Center. The commencement ceremony was very inspiring and ended the semester-long experience on a positive note. My supervisor was in attendance to receive an award that she won from my nomination. Now I have five days to be a tourist before I fly back to Minnesota!   Commencement

T — 2 weeks

Thursday, April 23, 2015

I fly home in two weeks and I have a lot to accomplish before I go! Between wrapping up projects at my internship, writing papers and pulling together my final portfolio for The Washington Center, and doing last-minute tourist things, I barely have time to watch Netflix!   The Portfolio

Busy Busy Busy

Friday, April 17, 2015

We're getting down to the wire now. I officially complete my internship two weeks from today! It seems like each day adds a new project to my list of things to get done before April 30th! I feel like over the course of my entire life, with all the effort I've put into refining my time management skills, I've been preparing for the upcoming two weeks. I'm already looking forward to May 1st, when I can sit down at commencement and breathe a sigh of relief!   Work Work Work

The Beautiful Cherry Blossoms

Monday, April 13, 2015

Washington, D.C. is quite famous for its beautiful blooming cherry blossoms every spring. Unfortunately, viewing the blossoms on a peaceful spring day is made extremely difficult by the busloads of tourists that stand between you and the trees! I was advised by several D.C. natives to get to the Tidal Basin early, before the tourists arrive for the day. So I got up well before the crack of dawn and left my apartment at 5:45 am. These flowers better be out of this world, I thought to myself!

Crafting My Internship Experience

Friday, April 10, 2015

My semester at the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) has given me the opportunity to gain a large amount of experience with social media. I was in charge of the social media efforts during our crowdfunding campaign, I am working on designing a Facebook contest, and this week I gave a presentation about what I have learned and what I think CREST can do to strengthen their brand and reach a wider audience.

Celebrating Culture at Work

Thursday, April 02, 2015

My internship site, the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), is a very global organization. We have sustainable tourism projects and studies going on all over the world. For this reason, international students are very interested in interning with CREST, so our office is very diverse. To celebrate the wide range of cultures, my supervisor put together a series of lunch presentations in which each intern discusses where they come from and brings food from their culture.

Celebrating Earth Hour

Sunday, March 29, 2015

This weekend I attended an amazing event at the National Geographic Museum!

This week I explored Washington, D.C. in a new way by attending a free environmental film. I also had a great experience cooking dinner with my roommates for our RA.   Environmental Film Festival

Networking for Introverts

Sunday, March 22, 2015

Networking is a valuable, potentially career-changing, social activity that half of the professional working population thrives on while the other half suffers through. I’m an introvert to the core and there’s nothing wrong with that! But for me and many other introverts, networking can become this awkward ordeal, instead of the valuable opportunity it’s supposed to be. I attended my first networking event this week and, after a slow start, I had a great experience!

Networking Part II

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

In my last post I wrote about a couple assignments I have to do for The Washington Center (TWC). I went into detail about the resume review, so today I want to talk about the informational interview. The purpose of this interview is to help us determine the steps needed to be successful in our career fields, to learn what a typical day in a desired career is like, and to gain experience conversing with professionals.   Informational Interview
