Metro or Mumbi?

Thursday, February 27, 2014

I'm to that point in my journey where I'm conflicted with two opposing identities. Am I a tourist? Or have I finally earned the right to be called resident of DC? The incident which brought me to this decision: the Metro. I have a love-hate relationship with this form of public transit. The first time I visited DC, I marveled at it! My brother and I could not get enough of riding the Metro (so much so, that my brother would sometimes take us the most roundabout way from point A to B).

Meet my long lost cousin. We look alike don’t we?  I didn’t even know I had cousins like this until my dad started calling me KT-Rex for all the meat I eat. As soon as I found out I had a cousin in DC, I had to visit at his place…

The First Moments of the "Dream"

Following a jam-packed first couple of days of orientation came the much anticipated first day of work. I had no idea what to expect as I rushed through the Metro to my new internship with Leadership Africa USA (LAUSA). No amount of pre-professional coaching and research could tell me what I would need to be prepared for. Finally I made it and clumsily stumbled in like a high school freshman (I guess one could say I was a "freshman" to the work place). On our first day we hit the ground running.

Welcome to the [National] Jungle.....

Just ten days after my 22nd birthday I will be starting the next big chapter in my life: the transition from the University of Mount Union into the “real world.” I’ve been planning my semester in DC with the Washington Center since my freshman year in college. After a few “pivots” in my career plans, this is where the rubber meets the road and I can take my skills outside a classroom to the workplace.
