Volunteering

Another week has gone by in a blur. Temperatures have dropped once more and a winter storm alert is making us all dream of a snow day. The current weather conditions make it kind of hard to go out and explore, so instead of telling you about my trips around the city, I decided to tell you something more about my civic engagement project.

Seeing the sites

I'm having a hard time adjusting to the weather in DC. Last week it was snowing so hard that we had a snow day and this weekend it felt like springtime. Not that I'm complaining; I loved the weather this weekend, but it's sort of giving me whiplash. The good thing about this weekend's weather was that we finally got to go out and do some sightseeing.

Valentine's

Monday, February 17, 2014

After a week of relatively decent weather, the snow and the cold have returned to D.C. While at first the world seemed to have become a winter wonderland, after some time it turned into a winter wasteland. But with that cold came my first holiday in D.C.: Valentine's Day (I know it's not an official holiday, but bear with me). Valentine's presented me with a slight cultural difference in regard to being single on Valentine's Day. In Belgium, single people have their own version of Valentine's Day: Happy Single's Day -- a day on which we celebrate being single and fabulous. In the U.S.

Week 2: Changes

Saturday, February 08, 2014

My second week in DC couldn't be more different from the first. While the first was rather calm and relaxed, this week was pretty hectic. The second week is when your TWC experience truly begins: you start your internship, you have your first class, you have things to do for your program, civic engagement... It can all seem a bit overwhelming at first.

Adventures

Thursday, February 06, 2014

Spending a semester in a different city is always exciting: you get to meet tons of new people, visit all these places you've only ever seen on TV or in photographs, and experience firsthand what life is like in this new, undiscovered place. It's even more exciting when that city is halfway across the globe.
