Advocating for Immigration Rights

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

As part of my civic engagement project on Immigration Rights, I had the marvelous opportunity to be a part of the first Collegiate League of United Latin American Citizen (LULAC) Emerge Latino Conference this week. LULAC was founded in 1929 and has the mission of advancing economic, educational, political and civil rights of the Hispanic population in the United States.

Intern Empowerment Week

Monday, February 24, 2014

If I could set a theme for this week it would definitely be somewhere along the lines of “Interns are the Future.” Is this an overstatement? Perhaps; but I can honestly say that this week has made me feel proud of the contribution I have to my internship site, The Washington Center and my home university. I guess in my head the word “intern” can have such a negative connotation, and sometimes the real potential and capabilities of the person in that category may be overlooked.

Feeling at Home in D.C.

Monday, February 17, 2014

As the days start to become routine, I honestly feel that my time in Washington, D.C. is flying by. I suddenly realize I’ve been here for almost a month, and it feels like home. It’s hard to believe there was ever a time when I didn’t share a home with the girls who a couple of weeks ago were complete strangers to me, or a time when I didn’t use the Metro everyday or complain about the unusually cold weather in the city. It is with this realization that I end another exciting week in beautiful D.C.

A Very Unique Birthday

Monday, February 10, 2014

This week, my course professor asked us to list something we've done in the past week that we couldn't do at home. As I prepared to answer, I realized I've done a lot of things that would simply be impossible to do at my home university or in my home country for that matter. For starters, I had the marvelous opportunity to attend a lecture on cybersecurity at The Institute of World Politics. They had speakers from AT&T, The White House and the US Department of Defense discussing the issues with private and public partnership regarding this topic.

First Adventures in Washington, D.C.

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Law student, world traveler, and aspiring change-maker: that’s me in a nutshell. My name is Lily and I’m a 22-year old senior at ITESM in Guadalajara, Mexico. I’m very excited about being a student blogger for The Washington Center as I embark on my 15-week internship experience. I’m an adventurer at heart, and it translates to everything I do, bringing me to the most unexpected and exciting of places. My plans have taken me all around the world, and in the past couple of years I’ve had the fortune of living in Brazil and Australia.
