My Reflection

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

I have been away from D.C. for a little over two weeks. This has allowed me to reflect on my time at The Washington Center and my internship.

Missed Opportunities

Sunday, August 25, 2013

I set out with a mission to visit all the places I could during my summer in D.C. I am proud that I can say that I have seen all of those on my initial list. The great part about actually being in D.C. and talking to people who lived here for years is that it exposed me to locations that I was not familiar with before coming to the city. My problem is that I had so many places to visit and could not see them all. I now present you with my short list of "missed opportunities."

Under The Influence of Music

Monday, August 19, 2013

On August 1st the Under The Influence of Music tour made its stop in Bristow, Virginia. This concert featured recording artists such as Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rockey, B.o.B, and Trinidad Jame$, to name a few. I tried to organize a party bus for the other interns at The Washington Center, but with everyone being so busy that plan slowly failed. I decided that since I had my car, it would be easier for me to gather a small group of friends and drive to the concert. After a long day at our internships, everyone got changed and squeezed into my 2000 Nissan Altima.

A View of Criminal Justice

Saturday, August 10, 2013

Over the course of this summer, I have been able to visit some of the prime museum spots such as the National Crime and Punishment museum and the NSA's National Cryptologic Museum. These different places each explore different aspects that have made each criminal justice agency unique since their beginnings.

The Food of D.C. Part 2

Friday, August 09, 2013

It is now time for the second installment of The Food of D.C. I've been able to go to some interesting places and try new and interesting dishes.

Patrolling the D.C. Harbor

Monday, August 05, 2013

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to go on a ride along with an Officer of the D.C. Metro Police Harbor Patrol Unit. This was no regular ride along for me either, as my guide took me out on his boat in the Washington Canal.

DC Loves Dilla: A Tribute

Saturday, July 20, 2013

July 10th marked the 8th Annual Tribute & Fundraiser for the legendary producer, James Dewitt Yancey, better known to the hip-hop community as J. Dilla.DC Loves Dilla has been a special event where thousands of fans and artist show their appreciation for the man who dedicated his life to music.

The Food of D.C. Part 1

Friday, July 05, 2013

After working at your internship for a while, you realize that lunch time makes you just as happy as it did in grade school. Going around the office and asking for food recommendations is pretty close to asking people who their favorite musician is; you will get a different answer every time. One thing was constant, everyone raved about the variety of food that is available in D.C. I wanted to make it my mission to eat at places that I have never tried before. We try to go out and explore new food locations at least once a week and I have yet to be disappointed.

Theodore Roosevelt Island

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Although I planned to go on my own time, I was glad to hear that one of the optional trips through the Washington Center was a trip to Theodore Roosevelt Island. The trip to get there ended up taking longer than we expected (only due to faulty group navigation skills). Getting to know a few more people along the way made it a fun experience. Canoeing in the Potomac river is now on my to do list.

The Anticipation: Washington D.C.

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

I chose to do my internship at The Washington Center due to the strong recommendations from Bloomsburg students who experienced the program first-hand. The networking events, Civic Engagement Project, Roundtable on Civil Society & Social Responsibility, Academic Course, and the city in general seemed to make a lasting impression on TWC alumni at Bloomsburg. I knew that if I could find an internship location that would match perfectly with my interest, I would not be able to pass the opportunity up.
