"Hey Obama, we don't need no climate drama"
D.C. is one of the best places to attend a protest. So that's what I did. I attended a climate protest on the National Mall, advocating against the Keystone Pipeline. This is an issue I feel strongly about.
The protest on the National Mall was great and everyone was holding a sign or a banner. First, we mixed in the crowd and listened to speakers discussing their concerns and their reasons for participating in the protest. The crowd was going wild. Chanting mottos, interacting with the speakers, going wild with the music. I got completely wrapped up in the protest and was extremely excited. I started chanting with the protesters, interacting with the speakers and going wild with the music.

I plucked up courage and followed my friends to get backstage. By slightly spinning the truth and holding up my TWC badge I easily got registered to enter the backstage area (seriously, this was way too easy. I even said I was an intern with CVS the supermarket instead of CBS the TV station, accidentally). I enjoyed part of the show backstage and got to meet some amazing people. I was able to meet Rosario Dawson (known for Sin City and Seven Pounds), Nolan Gould (Luke from Modern Family) and my favorite: Evangeline Lilly (Kate from Lost). She is the coolest and the sweetest. Going into a day without any expectations, turned into a great day meeting celebrities.
Jarco had the chance to meet several interesting people during his experience.
The climate protests are probably the coolest of all protests. It's probably most comparable to a 1960s party or a hippie party. Everyone is walking around happy, protesting in peace and having a bunch of fun.
After a quick lunch and a hot chocolate from Starbucks we mixed into the 'March for the Climate.' From chanting "Hey Obama, we don't need no climate drama," to dancing at completely random dance parties emerging in the middle of the once so busy streets of D.C. Is there anything better then a spontaneous Harlem Shake in the streets of D.C.? I think not.
On a cloudy day, protesters take over the mall with a hippie-like celebration.
After the march, parade, hipster-walk or however you wish to call it, things got even weirder, and even more hippie-like. Climate protesters are ready to party, anywhere and anytime. 4 p.m. and the National Mall changed into a giant dance floor. An awesome beat and the climate protest crowd (including 70-year olds) goes wild. And by wild, I mean hysterical. Just forget about everything, loosen up and go crazy with the beats blasting from the speakers. And what would a climate protest be without dancing in a huge hippie-circle?
This protest was one of my best experiences here in D.C. so far. I had the best time of my life and it was such a good experience to loosen up after my first few weeks of interning. If you're in D.C. and you can attend a protest (depending on the cause of course) I'd say go for it, especially if it's a climate protest.
It's been a great ride so far. D.C. is amazing. My internship is getting more exciting by the minute. My course is demanding but interesting, and the seminars are just crazy interesting. Everything is so amazingly awesome. I can't wait for my next adventure (and I can't wait for spring). According to my plans I'll be experiencing some cool adventures in the future as well. Soon I'll post a blog of my visit to New York City.
