Program Areas
When students are accepted by The Washington Center, they are assigned, according to their interests, to one of twelve thematically organized programs or to our Postgraduate Professional Development Program, specially designed for recent graduates or graduate students. Each program has one or more professional program advisors who counsel, place, supervise and help evaluate students, as well as organize activities for them during the day or half-day when students are not at their internships.

Gives students the experience and skills they need to compete successfully in the business world. Under the direction of qualified mentors and specialists, students learn how legislation affects business and how business influences decisions made on Capitol Hill. Whether the students' majors are finance, economics, business administration, accounting, international business, human resources, computer science or marketing, this program will help them achieve their goals. Students in this program work in the public, private, non-governmental and the nonprofit sectors.

In this special honors program, 12 international students and 12 students from the United
States will participate in Washington, D.C.,- based internships that will help them acquire
skills for promoting sustainable development around the world. The program uses the
United Nation’s Eight Millennium Development Goals as the basis for understanding
today’s global challenges. These set out specific targets and corresponding indicators for:
eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; achieving universal primary education; promoting
gender equality and empowering women; reducing child mortality; improving maternal
health; combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases; ensuring environmental
sustainability; and ensuring global partnerships for development. This program is
sponsored by the Ford Motor Company.

Bureau, Pan American Health Organization, The World Bank, UNIFEM/USA
(the United Nations Development Fund for Women), U.S. Department of State,
U.S. Department of Commerce, SID-Washington (Society on International
Development), Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute, TransAfrica Forum, International Food Policy Research Institute, and European
Union - Delegation of the European Commission to the United States. |

Governors Internship Program

Provides future leaders from different Mexican states professional and academic training in areas related to the economic and social development of their communities.
Participants develop a project that impacts and improves the well-being of their regions, by attracting investment or by
representing a product or an industry. |
Placement sites have included the Merrill Lynch, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Woodrow Wilson Institute, U.S.- Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Mexican Embassy, Bank of America, Greater Washington Chamber of Commerce , and Inter-American Development Bank , among many others. |

- Students are required to undertake a project assigned by their state government. |
International Affairs Program

Prepares interns for careers in international affairs working in fields such as human rights, national
security, international trade, global women's rights, refugees, and conflict resolution. The program features visits to the Egyptian, Israeli, Saudi, French, Swiss, Nigerian, South African and other embassies, as well as panels on themes such as counter-terrorism and international development.

Placement sites have included the U.S. Department of State, Amnesty International, National Defense University, American Enterprise Institute, American Council of Young Political Leaders, the Constituency for Africa, Embassy of Paraguay, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the United Nations Association, among many others. |

Law and Criminal Justice Program |

Prepares students for careers in law or law enforcement. Students work for attorneys, drafting legal documents, or on civil rights and international affairs issues. Law enforcement related internships provide students with experience investigating crimes, interviewing witnesses, or strategizing with colleagues on issues of homeland security. Interns work in the government at the federal or local level, in private firms, or associations. |
Placement sites have included the U.S. Department of Justice, Interpol, U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, U.S. Marshals Service, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender and various private law firms, among many others. |

Mass Communications Program |

NAFTA - Americas Leaders Program |

This program engages students from throughout the world to participate in interactive forums and discussions with nationals from different countries on topics such as international trade agreements, multilateral organizations, cross-cultural communication, business relations, international cooperation, migration, energy and environment, and international laws and regulations.
Traditionally, participants have come mainly from Canada, the United States, Mexico and Latin America, and have had a strong interest in learning more about regional integration, and the relationships among and within states in the Western Hemisphere. It is a good fit for students looking to increase their knowledge and expertise about regional integration in the Americas and improve their understanding of the ever-increasing interdependence between states, as well as U.S. policies towards Latin America and Canada. |

Political Leadership Program |

Provides internships with members of Congress, congressional committees, political party organizations, and interest groups.
It places students squarely in the arena of political action, where they have opportunities to work on such critical issues as national defense, homeland security, environmental protection, tax policy, social security, health care, and the Middle East peace process.
Students meet with policymakers and other influential figures as part of additional programming. |
Placements have been with the White House Office of Public Affairs, House Ways and Means Committee, Congressional Offices, National Republican Congressional Committee, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and many other offices and organizations. |

Science and Policy Program |

Prepares students for careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and public policy fields. Students will have the opportunity to explore the ways in which science, government and society intersect. Students will explore the ways in which science, government and society intersect. Students will observe scientific, technological and environmental problems and have the opportunity to study the dynamics of these issues in relation to national and international institutions, organizations and governments. Students interested in health studies, environmental and energy sciences, engineering and the biological sciences are encouraged to apply. Students interested in health sciences, biological sciences, engineering and the environment are encouraged to apply. Students take an academic course tailored to this program four days per week.

U.S.-China Bilateral Trade

Prepares students to analyze and understand the trade relationship between
China and the United States and obtain practical experience in productive
negotiation. The program helps students develop an understanding of both
the Chinese and Western business cultures and improve their capabilities to
manage cross-cultural collaboration and address issues of the U.S.-China
bilateral trade agenda. Limited to 20 students (10 U.S. students and 10
international students), this program is sponsored by The Boeing Company
and is open only to students from three U.S. and three Chinese universities
(see “Other Information” for more details). |
