The U.S.- China Bilateral Trade Internship Program

U.S. - China Bilateral Trade Program WebsiteIn 2007, The Boeing Company partnered with The Washington Center to launch the U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Internship Program. The program brings Chinese and U.S. students together to work, study and learn in Washington, D.C. to facilitate bilateral trade, best business practices, and cross-cultural awareness between the two countries. It also helps Chinese students develop an understanding of the U.S. business-culture, specifically policy-making and best business practices; and assists U.S. students in understanding the Chinese culture, traditions and mindset.

The Washington Center offers this program once a year in the spring, for three consecutive years, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Twenty students are selected each year.

Ten of these “Boeing Fellows” come from each country. Eligibility is restricted to students from the following universities:

United States:
  • California State University - Long Beach
  • University of Washington
  • Washington University in St. Louis
In China:
  • Fudan University
  • Peking University
  • Tsinghua University

Program Components


The fifteen-week program is centered around an internship, an academic course, and additional activities. The Washington Center places the Boeing Fellows, according to their interests, in substantive internships related to such areas as international trade and U.S.–China relations.  Placement sites may include governmental, international, business and nonprofit organizations.

Eligibility

 

United States students must:

Be enrolled as juniors or seniors at one of the following universities:

University of Washington; California State
University- Long beach; and
Washington University in St.Louis.

Have a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Receive academic credit from their university and have the endorsement of their campus liaison or faculty sponsor.

Chinese students must:

Be enrolled in their last year or have recently graduated from one of the following universities: Peking University; Tsinghua University; Fudan University.

Have a grade point average equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.

All students should have a strong interest in issues surrounding bilateral trade, business practices in the United States and China, and cross-cultural collaboration.

  • U.S. Department of Commerce

Application Components and Procedures


The application consists of the following, all of which must be provided in English:

1) The complete application form

2) An official transcript

3) Two letters of recommendation

4) A one-page resume

5) A 500 -word essay on a topic related to the U.S.-China bilateral relationship

6) TOEFL score of 213 or higher. This is equivalent to 550 on the paper-based scale (for international students only).

7) A phone interview with one of The Washington Center staff.

Program Cost


All selected students will receive a scholarship which covers The Washington Center’s program and housing fees, contributions toward health insurance and airfare, and a monthly stipend to offset living expenses.

Chinese students will in addition be reimbursed for the J-1Visa SEVIS fee.

Agencies: Ways to Participates


Current affiliated agencies and new agencies can participate in this program at different levels: hosting an intern, volunteering speakers and helping The Washington Center build strategic alliances.
