Main Internship Programs
If you will be a second-semester sophomore, junior or senior during your internship, you should select your preferred program from among our Main Internship Programs. Each of the thematically-oriented programs described below has one or more professional program advisors who counsel, work to secure internships for, supervise and help evaluate students, as well as organize activities for them during the day or half-day when students are not at their internships.
Please note that some programs are available only during a certain term or to students from specific countries.
The Washington Center also has a few offerings specifically for those interning at select government agencies. Check out our federal programs.

Advocacy, Service and Arts Program |
|
| Gives students first-hand professional experience with national advocacy groups, international nongovernmental organizations, local charitable groups, cultural organizations, or federal agencies. Interns meet weekly to hear from leaders in these areas and to learn about the many challenges and opportunities facing these organizations as they seek to promote social change. Internships are four and one-half days per week. |

Business and Management Program |
|
Gives students the experience and skills they need to succeed in the highly competitive and increasingly regulated business world as well as in the government and nonprofit arenas. Students learn about the current business environment, corporate responsibility and ethics, and the intersections of business and government. Whether the students’ majors are finance, economics, business administration, accounting, human resources or marketing, this program will help them achieve their goals. |

Cordova/ Fernos Congressional Program
(Students from Puerto Rico only) |
|
| Limited to students from Puerto Rico, this program enables students to learn about the legislative and diplomatic role of the U.S. Congress and federal government in national and international affairs. This program combines a four-day-per-week internship with a full day of educational activities that include seminars, workshops, cultural tours, and White House briefings as well as a luncheon with the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico. |

Ford Motor Company Global
Scholars Program |
|
Enables 12 international students and 12 students from the United States to acquire skills for promoting sustainable development around the world. This program combines a four-day-per-week internship with a full day of educational activities based on the United Nation’s Eight Millennium Development Goals. These goals set out specific targets and corresponding indicators for: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; achieving universal primary education; promoting gender equality and empowering women; reducing child mortality; improving maternal health; combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability; and ensuring global partnerships for development. This program is sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. |

- Scholarship info: U.S. students accepted into this program receive $3,000 in financial assistance. International students from universities outside of the U.S. accepted into the program receive a scholarship that covers the program and housing fees, plus a stipend.

Global Trade and Regional Integration Program |
|
This program prepares students to understand global business enterprise and related international trade policy through exploration of regional economic integration. The program combines a four-day-per-week internship with a full day of academic programming. Topics covered include globalization, global and regional trade, bilateral and regional free trade agreements (particularly in the Americas), energy security, sustainable development, microfinance and other contemporary issues. The objective of the program is to provide students skills, knowledge and understanding that are of value to organizations and governments engaged in today's global environment |

Governors Internship Program
(For Mexican students only) |
|
This program combines a four-day-per-week internship with a full day of project development and management activities. It provides future leaders from different Mexican states professional and academic training in areas related to the economic and social development of their communities.
Participants develop a project that impacts and improves the well-being of their regions, by attracting investment or by representing a product or an industry. |

International Affairs Program |
|
Prepares students for careers in international affairs working in fields such as human rights, national security, international trade, global women's rights, refugees, conflict resolution, international development and diplomacy. Program activities feature visits to the Egyptian, Israeli, Saudi, French, Swiss, Nigerian, South African, Pakistani, Korean or other embassies, as well as panels on themes such as counter-terrorism and international development. Internships are four and one-half days per week. |

Law and Criminal Justice Program |
|
Prepares students for careers in law or law enforcement. Students work in federal or local government legal offices, at the federal or local level, in private law firms or associations, in an array of practice areas including criminal prosecution and defense, civil rights, consumer protection, family law and immigration. Law enforcement-related internships provide students with experience investigating crimes, interviewing witnesses, or analyzing issues related to criminal justice. |

Media and Communication Program |
|
Prepares students for careers in the expanding field of communications, including print and broadcast journalism, production, advertising, public relations, photography, graphic design, political communications, and electronic and new media. Through seminars, lectures and personal interviews, students have numerous opportunities to meet and speak with leading practitioners and representatives of major firms in these fields. Internships are four and one-half days per week. |

Political Leadership Program |
|
Provides internships with members of Congress, congressional committees, political party organizations, campaigns, lobbying firms and interest groups. It places students squarely in the arena of political action, where they have opportunities to work on such critical issues as national defense, homeland security, environmental protection, tax policy, Social Security, and health care. Students meet with policymakers and other influential figures as part of additional programming. Symposia give students a unique perspective on lobbying, campaigning, and how Washington works. Internships are four and one-half days per week. |

Science, Technology and Society |
|
Offered both for students majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and related disciplines and for students of other majors with an interest in the intersections of these fields with their society and the larger world. The sciences and related fields, of course, lie at the heart of many of the most pressing issues faced by policy-makers today, including global climate change, sustainable development, population and food security, alternative energy sources, improved and expanded health care, bioethics and biotechnology, and infrastructure improvement. This program helps students become better acquainted with the policy-making process, the agencies and organizations that shape policy, and the larger (often global) social, political, and economic considerations that affect policy. Internships are four and one-half days per week. |

U.S.-China Bilateral Trade
Internship Program

|
Prepares students to analyze and understand the bilateral trade relationship between China and the U.S. and obtain practical experience in productive negotiation and mediation. This program combines a four-day-per-week internship with a full day of academic programming in which participants develop an understanding of both the Chinese and Western business cultures, improve their capabilities to manage cross-cultural collaboration, and address issues of the U.S.-China bilateral trade agenda. Sponsored by The Boeing Company, this program is open only to students from three U.S. and three Chinese universities (see below for more details). |
