International Students

Mexico

Mexican students typically come under three different options:

1. Universities

“My experience in Washington DC has contributed to the better development of my leadership skills. I am a Mexican citizen, but above all, I am a citizen of the world, and as such, it is my responsibility to get involved and adopt an active role within the international community. I am sure that I will be able to take advantage of these skills when I come back to my country, and hence contribute to its better development, and to the project of a better world for the enjoyment of future generations.

“I strongly believe that coming to Washington to do an internship was the right decision. I look back at this Semester and I see many of my goals accomplished. I have not only gained work experience but also made valuable friends, gained a better understanding of the U.S. culture, made great contacts, and had the opportunity to attend multiple Washington Center events. Just the chance itself of establishing a daily routine in the capital of the United States, a place where you find the most powerful people in the globe, was worth the whole experience. only turned me into a better professional, but also a better academic person.”

Leticia Hernandez, TWC Fall ’08,  Universidad de Monterrey

2. Governors Internship Program

For more than ten years, the Governors Program has been preparing future leaders from Mexico to face the complex challenges of the twenty-first century.  Nowadays, many Mexican Governors provide full funding to students competitively selected by each state government.

These participants come to The Washington Center to obtain professional and academic training in areas related to the economic and social development of their State and their communities.  The program combines a 4 day per week internship with a full day of activities allowing students to enrich their knowledge and gain cultural and social experiences.  During the semester, participants develop a project that impacts and improves the well-being of their regions by attracting investment or by representing a product or an industry.  When they complete the program, projects are presented to their state governor.

To date, most of Mexico’s state governments have supported the program. Examples of participating States are Coahuila, Sonora, Campeche, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Morelos, Tamaulipas, Yucatán, Jalisco, Michoacán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and Nuevo León.

As a new generation of young leaders emerges from this program, we are dedicating our efforts to strengthen our alumni association. Our leaders are placed in key positions in the private and public sectors. Bringing them together represents a unique opportunity to improve the results of our program for generations to come. Jointly with the alumni associations in each state, we are developing ways to collaborate and to involve them in The Washington Center's activities and programs.

Sample Placements - Placement sites have included:

  • U.S. Congress and Senate
  • Organization of American States

“I consider myself very lucky to be part of this experience; Now I would have the chance to apply what I learned here back in the public service in Coahuila. I’m positive that this experience will help me to become a better servant to the people and to climb high in my political career but also to contribute to the government projects and benefit society as a whole.”

Julio Cesar Torres,

This reaffirm my commitment to my State, my country and science”.
