Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program
The Ford Motor Company is partnering with The Washington Center to launch the Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program. The program will bring students from Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, United States and Vietnam together to work, study and learn in Washington, D.C. to foster economic development, analyze mechanisms to continue the progress on the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, and increase cross-cultural awareness between these countries.
The Washington Center will offer this program once a year in the fall, for three consecutive years, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Twenty four students will be selected each year.
Twelve of these “Ford Fellows” will come from the United States and twelve will come from universities in the following cities:
- Salvador, Brazil
- Sao Paulo, Brazil
- Chennai, India

- Saint Petersburg, Russia
- Johannesburg, South Africa
- Hanoi, Vietnam

Program Components
The fifteen-week program will center around an internship, an academic course, and additional activities. The Washington Center will place the Ford Fellows, according to their interests, in substantive internships related to such areas as poverty reduction, AIDS prevention, children health, education, gender equality, environmental sustainability and regional development. Placement sites may include governmental, international, business and nonprofit organizations.

Eligibility
Students coming from U.S. schools must:
Be enrolled as a junior or senior at one of our affiliated institutions.
Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If your GPA is below 3.0 your application may be considered with a third recommendation letter.
Receive academic credit from your college or university for your participation in the program. The Washington Center does not grant academic credit.
Receive the endorsement of your campus liaison or faculty sponsor. All applications need the endorsement of the sponsoring home institution. |
Students coming from abroad must:
Be enrolled in the last year, or have recently graduated from, an affiliated university in Chennai, Johannesburg, Hanoi, Saint Petersburg, Salvador or Sao Paulo.
Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. If your GPA is below 3.0 your application may be considered.
Present a valid TOEFL score (or equivalent) of 213 or higher (550 on the paper based scale) in order to qualify. |

Program Cost
The cost of The Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program for the fall 2008 semester is $5,693 for tuition and $4,300 for housing plus a $60 application fee.
- Students selected from U.S. Schools will receive a $3,000 scholarship.
- Students selected from universities abroad will receive a scholarship that covers tuition,
housing and application fee plus contributions toward health insurance, airfare, and a monthly stipend.

Current affiliated agencies and new agencies can participate in this program at different levels: hosting an intern, volunteering speakers and helping The Washington Center build strategic alliances.
