Cost and Financial Assistance

Private Funding

This information is applicable to students applying for programs in 2009.

The Washington Center is able to offer selected students assistance from a number of private sources. All of the below listed awards are competitive in nature.

Diversity Leaders, Civic Engagement, and International Leaders Awards

Diversity Leaders Award: $3,000 housing financial assistance

Civic Engagement Award: $1,000 housing financial assistance

Recipients are chosen competitively on the basis of their academic performance and record of involvement and leadership in relevant settings (college or university, community, etc.) as reflected on their application including their resume and transcript.

    Requirements for Diversity Leaders and Civic Engagement Awards

    • U.S. citizenship or permanent U.S. residency required for Diversity Leaders applicants.
    • Ability to contribute to the diversity of our students and of Diversity Leaders awardees (Diversity Award applicants only).
    • Not available to students in the Postgraduate Professional Development Program.
    • Students are encouraged to specify interest in Diversity Leaders Award and/or Civic Engagement Award on the application
    • Priority consideration is given to students who apply by the Competitive Deadline.

    International Leaders Award: $5995

    Recipients are chosen competitively on the basis of their leadership, academic achievement and vision for global community development.

    Application Requirements

    • Must be an international undergraduate student enrolled in a non-U.S. university affiliated with The Washington Center.  Available during Spring and Fall only.  For additional information, contact internationalinfo@twc.edu
    • Applicant must be proficient in English.
    • In the required essay, which is part of the internship application, applicant should discuss a topic of global concern and its importance to the applicant’s country and the world, and how he or she will contribute to their field of interest upon returning home.

    Honors Scholarships

    Students interested in any of the Honors Scholarships should submit their application by the Competitive Deadline.  In the Competitive Awards section of the application, students must indicate interest in applying for any of these awards.

    • PDF DocumentAssociation of College Honor Societies Scholarship (ACHS) (pdf)
      Provides $1,000 housing scholarship to students in national honor societies that are members of the Association of College Honor Societies (www.achsnatl.org). Three scholarships per society are awarded each year.  Applicants must submit documentation verifying membership.  Examples include a copy of a membership certificate or letter from the local chapter or national office or an email from the local chapter representative.  Postgraduate Program participants are eligible to apply. Priority consideration is given to students who apply by competitive deadline.

    • National Collegiate Honors Council Scholarship
      Provides $2,000 housing scholarship to students who are in honors programs or colleges that are members of the National Collegiate Honors Council (www.nchchonors.org). Eighteen scholarships are awarded each year.  Applicants must submit a nomination from their honors director or dean and a one-page statement describing their contributions to their honors program or college.Priority consideration is given to students who apply by competitive deadline.

    • Pi Sigma Alpha Washington Internship Scholarship
      Provides a $2,500 housing scholarship for at least one student chosen by Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society, for its Washington Internship Scholarship award.  Students apply directly to Pi Sigma Alpha for this scholarship by April 15th.  For an application form and more information, Click Here

    Other Private Scholarships

    Students interested in the below listed awards should submit their application by the regular deadline.  Students will automatically be considered for any of the below awards for which they are eligible.  U.S. citizenship or permanent U.S. residency is required for these awards.

    For some of these awards, the recipients can only be determined after an internship placement is secured.  Although qualified students will automatically be considered for most of these awards, students are advised to consult with their program advisor during the placement process to determine eligibility and for an understanding of how consideration for these awards may affect their placement options.

    • CFGU-TWC Internship Initiative for Muslim American Students
      Muslim American students are eligible to be considered for scholarships of $1,000 - $2,500 through a partnership established between The Washington Center and the Center for Global Understanding (CFGU). In order to be eligible for this funding, students will need to apply to The Washington Center using a watermarked application located on the CFGU Website. At this time, students interested in this form of financial assistance should not use the TWC online application. A supplemental data form will be requested from qualified students upon acceptance.     • Scholarship for Students with Disabilities PDF Document
      Funded by the AT&T Foundation and HSC Foundation, these awards provide $2,500 to competitively selected students who self-identify as having a disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Priority consideration is give to undergraduate students who apply by the competitive deadline. Postgraduate Program applicants may be considered.  Applicants must submit documentation verifying their disability along with a personal statement.     • The Alaska Scholarship Fund provides funding for students from Alaska, with preference for Native Alaskans. Made possible by BP (Exploration) Alaska and Totem Ocean Trailer Express.

    • Comcast Diversity in Congress Scholarships provide $5,000 to students of diverse backgrounds from Maryland’s HBCU institutions interning in Congress. This award may be combined with a $4,500 state-provided scholarship if a recipient is a resident of Maryland. In this case, the total amount of assistance provided would be $9,500.

    • New York Life Foundation and New York Stock Exchange Diversity Scholarships provide $3,000 towards housing costs to students of diverse backgrounds who are in the business and finance fields, majoring in related fields, or whose internships involve assignments and projects relevant to the business and finance profession. Students must intern in the public sector or nonprofit sectors.

    • American Express Foundation Nonprofit Leaders Scholarships provide $1,500 toward housing costs to students interested in pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector.  Students must intern in a nonprofit organization.


    Application Requirements

    • Eligible students will be automatically considered for the awards listed under “Other Private Scholarships.”

    • Submit application by regular deadline

    • In one of your application issue essays, be sure to address policy issues relevant to the goal for which the scholarship has been established.

    • Scholarship recipients may be invited to special events and take part in activities with donors.
