The Washington Center / BB&T Hispanic Workforce Initiative
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars encourages fellowship applications for The Washington Center/BB&T Hispanic Workforce Initiative. This fellowship opportunity integrates academic and work experience to provide participants with hands-on training and practical experience in the financial services industry.

With the Hispanic community in the United States growing significantly in recent years, BB&T is at the forefront in engaging and demonstrating its loyalty to the Hispanic community. In 2002, it launched a corporate-wide marketing effort, including establishing Hispanic Banking Centers to serve the special needs of this community, as well as a series of outreach and education efforts.
The Fellowship
The BB&T fellows are admitted to The Washington Center Internship Program. Internships are 10 weeks in the summer term. Participants take part in the following program components designed so that participants can earn full-academic credit from their home institution.
- Comprehensive orientation
- 4 ½ days/week internship with BB&T in Washington, D.C.
- Academic course
- Congressional Speaker Program
- Presidential Lecture Series
- Embassy Visit Program
- Small group discussions and workshops
- Activities and events tailored to BB&T fellows
- Comprehensive internship supervision, monitoring, and evaluation
- Housing and student life services

The Internship Experience
The internship experience will be managed through BB&T’s DC Metro Region, the largest regional BB&T operation in their geographic footprint.
Interns will have the opportunity to learn about the retail, commercial and operational aspects of the bank through assigned projects, observation and interaction with a wide range of managers. In addition, they will take part in the Business and Technology academic curriculum of the WashingtonCenter as well as the Presidential Speaker Series, which invites leaders from government, business and academia to address the interns.
Sample internship assignments may include, but are not limited to:
- Learning and exploring the essentials of retail branch operations, commercial lending, deposit generation, mortgage lending, private banking, and wealth management
- Developing financial analysis skills
- Supporting strategic planning efforts
- Managing special projects as assigned
Fellowship Award
The fellowship award will cover the following:
- The Washington Center application fee
- The Washington Center program fee
- The Washington Center housing fee
- Living allowance of $125/week
In addition, upon completion of the fellowship, graduates may be invited by BB&T to further their training in the financial service industry through the Leadership Development Program.

Fellowship Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be of Hispanic background with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
- Attend a higher education institution in and/or be a permanent resident of Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia or Washington, D.C.
- Major in banking, finance, accounting, business, management, or other related discipline
- Be at least a rising junior, recent college graduate, or a graduate student
- Be eligible to earn academic credit from their home institution if enrolled as an undergraduate.
- Have a 2.75 GPA or higher
Deadlines and Selection Process
Summer 2007 Deadline is March 30
- Applicants must complete The Washington Center application form and submit by the deadline.
- Applications will be shared with BB&T for review.
- Applicants will be interviewed and undergo screening process administered by BB&T.
- Official notification regarding fellowship award will be provide by The Washington Center.
- Applicants not awarded the BB&T fellowship still may be admitted in The Washington Center internship program and may be eligible for other financial aid opportunities.
