Topics & ComponentsRoad to the White House: Faculty Seminar will combine a series of lectures, discussions, site visits, tours and briefings to allow for faculty to interact with individuals who are experienced with presidential campaigns. In some cases, the participants may serve as the audience for a C-SPAN program. Time will be set aside for faculty to share their ideas with each other on teaching related topics as well as to reflect on the day’s topics and experiences.

The seminar will focus on five major political topics, with leading journalists, public officials and political experts headlining the discussion, as well as a number of smaller break-out sessions.

  • Topic 1: “Primaries, Caucuses, and Securing the Nomination”
  • Topic 2: “The Conventions: The Spectacle and Substance”
  • Topic 3: “Campaign Finance: Following the Money”
  • Topic 4: “The General Election: Air Wars, Ground Wars, and the Electoral Map”
  • Topic 5: “Presidential Debates: Changing the Game and Sticking to the Script”

What will be accomplishedWe expect that faculty will increase their knowledge of the intricacies of presidential election campaigns; develop an appreciation for the increasing impact of the media on campaigns; gain exclusive access to lectures, discussions, site visits, tours, and briefings; be able to see the presidential campaign process through the eyes of those most involved; learn how to utilize the C-SPAN archives for more visual classroom applications and share ideas for the development of syllabi and curricula related to the seminar topics.
