Liaison Tips

Liaison status & multiple Liaisons

Most Washington Center liaisons have positions such as professor of political science, director of the honors program, director of internships or cooperative education, director of career services, associate dean of arts and science or assistant to the provost. Liaisons can be successful from almost any position within the college or university. What really determines their effectiveness is the commitment they bring to the job and how well they follow through.

Depending on the size and complexity of the institution, more than one liaison -- or a primary liaison and one or more other co-liaisons -- may be appropriate. How The Washington Center classifies your role as liaison is a decision left to you and your institution, but it is critical to the information flow between TWC, students and your office.

Sole Liaison:

  • Application Approval: individual is designated to approve applications and receives all student reports, grades and portfolios.
  • Prospective Students: TWC will direct prospective students to the Sole liaison.
  • Communications: individual receives Liaison Newsletter and ad hoc emails about programs, scholarships, deadlines, etc.

Primary Liaison:

  • Application Approval: individual is authorized, with one or more others, to approve applications but is the one person to whom TWC should send reports, grades and portfolios for all students.
  • Prospective Students: TWC will direct prospective students to the primary liaison, but TWC may also share contact information of co-liaison.
  • Communications:  individual receives Liaison Newsletter and ad hoc emails about programs, scholarships, deadlines, etc.

Co-Liaison:

  • Application Approval: individual is authorized with one or more others to approve applications. TWC will send will send reports, grades and portfolios to the Primary Liaison.
  • Prospective Students: TWC will direct prospective students first to the Primary Liaison, but may also share contact information of co-liaisons with prospective students.
  • Communications: individual receives Liaison Newsletter and ad hoc emails about programs, scholarships, deadlines, etc.

Identifying one or more liaisons rests with the institution. Should roles on campus shift, an institution may change the liaison information at any time by contacting a member of the Institutional Relations staff at info@twc.edu or 1-800-486-8921. We strongly recommend that the institution complete an Institutional Affiliation Form to formally confirm the assignment(s).
