An estimated 34 million people are living with HIV or AIDS, with a large number of this population residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. In an effort to help battle this deadly disease, TWC’s LGBTQA Civic Engagement Project raised over $600 for the Whitman Walker Health’s AIDS Walk. The event took place at the Freedom Plaza on Saturday, October 27th.
With a desire to bring courage and hope to individuals battling HIV/AIDS, TWC headed a team of 23 students to participate in the AIDS walk hosted by Whitman-Walker Health, a community health center specializing in LGBTQ and HIV care. The organization sponsors the walk each year in an effort to raise funds for research and awareness.
Tom Hall, student from Alvernia University [1], walked in the spirit of friends who are personally affected by HIV/AIDS: “It was good see all the support and the community come together on the day of the walk. I plan on staying involved in the fight against AIDS and HIV. It affects me personally because it has affected the lives of those I love.”
The AIDS walk provided both, students and staff, with the opportunity to come together and make a difference in their communities.
