TWC welcomed Section Chief of the FBI's Financial Crimes Section, Timothy A. Gallagher. Programs who heard from the seasoned FBI employee included: Law and Criminal Justice, Legal Externship and Business and Global Trade.
Students learned that the Financial Crimes Section is comprised of 5 units including:
- Financial Institution Fraud
- Economic Crime
- Health Care Fraud
- Financial Intelligence Center
- Forensic Accounting Unit
Mr. Gallagher also covered the efforts of the Financial Crime Section as a whole and what they've been doing to counter serious threats at a national level. Initiatives include:
- Dedicating significant resources to the Financial Crime threats
- Targeting and dismantling criminal enterprises directing major fraud schemes at our nation's markets
- Identifying emerging fraud schemes
- Targeting schemes through national initiatives
- Establishing/enhancing fraud task forces to target complex financial crimes
To finish up the presentation, Mr. Gallagher discussed how TWC prepared him for his future at the FBI. Over 24 years ago, Mr. Gallagher arrived to D.C. seeking work experience in the regulation of financial markets and thought he wanted to pursue a career in the financial services industry. But through after his time with TWC, he decided that a career in federal law enforcement, specifically in the investigation of financial crimes, was where his true passion lied.
What he took away from his time in D.C. was much more than expected. Apart from just his internship, he was able to:
- Identify his future career path
- Build unique team skills
- Network with other interns
- Put his career goals into focus
