TWC interns from Kentucky met with Rep. Ben Chandler in the Congressman’s office in the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C. The students who attend Morehead State University, Easter Kentucky University and St. Louis University, spoke with the Congressman about policy issues concerning:
- Budget
- Mining industry/jobs
- Veterans Affairs
- Campaigning
When asked about the visit, Terrell Turner from Eastern Kentucky University said: “The best part of the Public Policy Dialogue on Capitol Hill was that Rep. Chandler was very honest with his answer to the various questions. He was also interested in hearing what we had to say, which was very interesting. I thought at most he would answer our questions briefly and then go on about his business, but he took the time to hear us out and create dialogue.”
Emily Grimm from St. Louis University had this to say about the visit to Congressman Chandler’s office: “I really appreciated being given the opportunity to talk directly with a representative of my district, while in D.C. Seeing pictures of horse farms, bottles of bourbon, and books on my hometown around the Congressman’s office was very comforting. Congressman Chandler knows his district very well, and we were able to talk about mutual acquaintances. He seems like a genuinely friendly and caring man, and it was nice to see exactly what my elected officials are doing. Thank you again for giving me such a wonderful and unique opportunity!”
