TWC and the U.S.-Japan Research Institute (USJI) [1] just finalized a groundbreaking partnership with the signing of an agreement on February 27, 2013. Fourteen students from eight top universities in Japan will receive full funding during a new, two-week international seminar.
The eight Japanese universities include:
- Doshisha University [2]
- Keio University [3]
- Kyoto University [4]
- Kyushu University [5]
- Ritsumeikan University [6]
- The University of Tokyo [7]
- University of Tsukuba [8]
- WASEDA University [9]
The core purpose of the seminar, funded by the U.S.-Japan Council’s TOMODACHI Initiative [10], is to foster cross-cultural exchange, leadership development and collaborative work for a new generation of leaders from the U.S. and Japan. The first seminar will take place in February 2014.
The project will focus on the study of building a strong civil society and the strategic, cultural and policy infrastructures that sustain it. Ultimately, the goal is to develop initiatives addressing the challenges faced by the devastated Tohoku region of Japan. The project will engage TWC interns and Japanese students in international project teams. Program components will be integrated events during “USJI Week,” which brings Japan’s top university professors to Washington, D.C.
