The Washington Center opens new housing facility in tandem with its first ever InternsROCK!™, internship appreciation week

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The largest housing facility exclusively for interns opened its doors May 26, 2010 in the nation’s capital. The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) brings students from over 400 colleges and universities across the United States to Washington, D.C. each year and now these students have the option to live in a new 140,000 square feet campus.

“Our new facility will allow us to provide a complete academic and residential experience for our students,” said TWC President, Mike Smith. “Because of the support of our donors, students will be able to live in their apartments, work out in the fitness center, attend class in the classrooms and lectures in the auditorium, and relax, or go online in the student or computer lounges.” The $38 million, six-story housing facility will be a central hub for students, with 95 residences, a 500-seat auditorium, six classrooms, a student lounge, a fitness center and parking areas. This summer alone, TWC will offer 32 academic courses in the building.

Accessible to public transportation, the campus is located near four metro rail stations. Each student residence will be fully functional with a kitchen, washer/dryer, and high-speed internet access. Students will stay the length of their academic program, whether it’s spring, summer or fall.

This facility also provides an economic boost for the growing NOMA district. "The Washington Center will bring more than 300 students to NoMa—marking the first new residential building within the NoMa BID,” said NoMa Business Improvement District President Liz Price. “We are looking forward to several other residential openings this year, making NoMa a true 24-hour community."

The new housing facility opens just before InternsROCK!—a city-wide intern appreciation week set for June 11-18, 2010. In conjunction with TWC, MTV-U and Destination DC, InternsROCK! is an initiative to honor the approximately 20,000 interns who flock to the D.C.-metro area each year to work at local businesses, non-profits and government agencies. Throughout the week, area restaurants, retailers and music venues will offer 20 percent off, 30 percent off and/or buy one, get one free discounts to interns wearing InternsROCK! wristbands.

Media interested in touring the new intern campus can do so by appointment on June 2, 2010 and images of the building are available. Contact Korenna Cline at k.cline@epicmediarelations.com for details.
