Diversity Scholars Enjoy Summer Term Internship in Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C.– The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars named Yong Huchai and Valerie Koch as the Summer 2006 recipients of Diversity Leadership Program scholarships, a program funded in part by The NYSE Foundation.

“The NYSE Foundation is pleased to partner with The Washington Center to help provide internships to deserving students,” said John A. Thain, the Foundation’s chairman.  “The Washington Center internships give these students a first-hand understanding of America’s financial system while enhancing their academic, civic and professional development.”

Huchai, an accounting major, attends Purdue University, and was part of the NAFTA Leaders Program at The Washington Center. Huchai interned at UBS, a global financial firm with operations in Washington.

“I have acquired a knowledge that can’t be obtained in school,” said Mr. Huchai. “My main goals in the internship were to acquire a strong background in the technical and fundamental analysis, and have an experience of what I might be doing in later on in the future. To increase my knowledge about analysis, I have spent a good amount of time in doing research in stocks. I am now more able to differentiate stocks that are not recommended to stocks that are undervalued and recommended to buy.”

Mr. Huchai added, “The work environment was a very fast-paced one, trades were placed on a daily basis and assignments were given in a non-stop basis. I was able to observe how different workers approach problems in different ways.”

Koch, a sociology major, attends The College of New Jersey, and took part in the Arts, Service, and Advocacy Program of The Washington Center.  Koch interned with the National Breast Cancer Coalition and was responsible for assisting in their legislative and public policy priorities.

“The Washington Center has truly provided me with the opportunity to alter the perspective on my future for the better, said Ms. Koch. “I have successfully applied my background in advocacy to all the work I have done with this program and have significantly grown professionally. I feel more confident than ever in knowing that I wish to pursue a masters degree in public policy after a one year fellowship in a related field.”

“I genuinely would like to thank The College of New Jersey, The Washington Center, and my scholarship provider, The New York Stock Exchange Foundation, for endorsing me in my endeavor this summer and would like to express my gratitude in advance for every promising avenue that is now obtainable as a result of your steadfast support.”
