Let's Have Some Fun!
Since my arrival to D.C., I’ve been hearing a lot about the importance of networking; how it's crucial to make contacts and stay in contact with the people you meet in order to succeed because you never know who can help you out in the future!
As part of networking, I’ve taken it upon myself to socialize more after work! It’s very easy to just want to go home and relax after a busy day at the office. I’m also in the habit of staying up late, even though I have to get up early during the week, so I’m always planning my next nap. On the other hand, I speculate what a waste it would be to sleep away all my free time! I could have very easily done just that last Thursday, but instead, other TWC students and I all decided to go to the Front Page (off the Dupont Circle metro stop) for happy hour!
It was so amazing! Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., all types of people line up at the Front Page for free tacos! That’s right; they were completely free! The only thing you have to pay for is a drink if you want one (and are of age of course)! Oh! And speaking of age, in order to get inside they will card you right at the door, so if you’re under 21, it’s my belief that you can still receive free tacos, but you can’t sit inside because alcohol is being served.
At any rate, you stand in line to receive whatever type of meat you would like; we had a choice of chicken or pork. Then you go through an assembly line and pick the ingredients you would like including, but not limited to, lettuce, cheese, salsa and guacamole. After that you just enjoy your taco, and possibly a drink, and socialize. I had an excellent time bonding with other students and although this past week I stuck with the people I knew, this Thursday I’d like to branch out to meet new people! For those that are interested in filling up some free time after work I would make a few suggestions!
1. Find a happy hour spot! There are plenty in D.C. that offer drink specials, if you like to partake and, even if you don’t, lots of places offer great discounts on appetizers and entrees. If you’re having trouble deciding where to go D.C. Happy Hours has a whole list of places to choose from, including information about the drink and food specials, weekdays and times, and even locations and closest metro stops!
2. Make it a tradition! I definitely plan to go to Free Taco Thursday for the rest of the time that I’m in D.C. By making it a tradition, I’ll have something constant to look forward to each week, which is something I really enjoy!
3. Be social! Going out after work gives you an opportunity to socialize with other people you wouldn’t ordinarily meet. There are a lot of young interns here from various backgrounds. Everyone’s pretty open so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! You never know what you might find!
