Merrill Lynch |
The Washington Center's program far exceeded my expectations, giving me increased motivation and clearer direction as I chart my course post-graduation. Interning at Merrill Lynch I had a balanced set of daily responsibilities and long-term research projects. I monitored and analyzed various company earnings and made recommendations as to which ones should be included in the group's stock portfolio. I had the opportunity to work with five financial advisors, which exposed me to different sectors of the business. As a result, I now feel as though I developed five areas of expertise.
My internship allowed me to access a goldmine of knowledge in my field, but I also enjoyed the academic nature of The Washington Center's programming. I found the lectures to be eye-opening and the assignments to be stimulating--I was led to better express my opinions and understand the world around me.
Of course The Washington Center encouraged me to improve my resume and build my professional skills, but my time in D.C. also challenged me to become a responsible leader who will give back to my community. Looking back, I realize that what I have taken away from my experience is directly proportional to what I put into it; and I hope that future students recognize this key point. |

Law Offices of Khadijah Ali |
My experience interning for the Law Offices of Khadijah Ali was unparalleled. I was given all kinds of rewarding tasks that will give me an edge while applying for law school within the next two years. I was responsible for interviewing and billing clients, drafting and filing motions, answering and returning phone calls, meeting with witnesses to prepare them for trial, serving subpoenas, visiting inmates to update them on their cases, writing demand letters and claims for legal suits, dealing with custody and divorce matters and much more. During my boss's trip to Africa, I was entrusted with running the office--I even stood in for the attorney before the judge on a juvenile matter!
Simply being in Washington was a wonderful opportunity. I was able to hear oral arguments in a Supreme Court case, visit the Embassy of Egypt, and make contacts that will benefit me once I enter the legal profession. I was also fortunate to receive The Washington Center's Diversity Leaders Award, a scholarship that helped to cover my housing costs.
Many things I learned in D.C. could never be taught in a classroom. I presented matters before the court, briefly ran a firm on my own and came to better understand what is needed to succeed in the business world. Even more importantly, I developed a stronger work ethic and am now better able to envision myself someday working the legal field. |
