The Washington Center (TWC) welcomed over 350 new fall interns during the main orientation at TWC. The new students kicked off their journey in the nation's capital, traveling far and wide to complete this unique internship experience from states like Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, and universities including Emerson College in Boston, Texas Christian University, Tiffin University in Ohio and the University of Puerto Rico.

TWC takes pride in welcoming all of our students, including students who come from countries all over the world. This semester is no exception, with 134 international students traveling from countries such as: Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Gibraltar, India, Japan, Netherlands, Niger, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkmenistan.

During orientation, the fall interns heard from a number of TWC staff members that they will be working closely with throughout the semester, including their academic program advisors and the career services department. They also found out more about their upcoming public policy dialogue meetings, a component of the TWC internship program, where students are provided with the opportunity to meet with senators, representatives or legislative staff at various offices on Capitol Hill, embassies throughout the city or public policy influencers in various fields.

After the hour-long event, students were given the option of attending an open house where they learned about how to select a civic engagement project. This semester, students will have the opportunity to create their own individual civic engagement project or participate in one of the 8 TWC-led projects including:

  1. Animal Welfare
  2. Education
  3. Immigrant Rights
  4. Homelessness
  6. Local Green
  7. Veterans
  8. Healthy Living
