The Washington Center’s Office of Internship Site Relations (OISR) hosted a Supervisors’ Workshop and Networking Reception on January 24th, 2013. Over 20 TWC intern supervisors represented their companies and organizations at the event, sharing best practices on growing and developing their interns.

During the event, Sweeta Hutchinson, Senior Manager of OISR, discussed the student experience and the vast support network that TWC provides both internship sites and students. Kinsey Holloway, Senior Student Relations Coordinator, discussed the transition that students experience when they adapt to DC life and a professional work culture. OISR’s latest initiative, a comprehensive evaluation of our internship sites' best practices.  Holloway highlighted focus areas that supervisors can develop to enhance the internship experience. After a discussion on what it means to be a supervisor and mentor, the group shared best practices on helping students:

  • Expand their networks
  • Develop interpersonal skills
  • Manage feedback
  • Manage projects
  • Develop skills in public speaking

Once the Supervisor Workshop ended, internship site supervisors in attendance enjoyed a Networking reception. President Mike Smith expressed his gratitude on part of the organization for the enormous positive impact supervisors have on students. Mashaal Ahmed, Senior Coordinator from Career Services, invited supervisors to become involved with student resume reviews and professional development seminars.

Please email internships@twc.edu if you are an internship supervisor and would like to receive the presentation and/or notes from the session. An OISR team member would be happy to meet with you and provide valuable information on working with interns.
