The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) recognized their 2012 Academic Affairs Award recipients during a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. TWC celebrated devoted faculty, engaged universities and special partners for their work in the fields of civic education and leadership.

Awardees included:

  • Marvin Kalb, Civic Education Leadership Award
  • Dr. Steven Hurwitz, Liaison of the Year from Tiffin University
  • Bridgewater State University, Public University of the Year (accepted by President Dana Mohler-Faria and Campus Liaison George Serra)
  • Ohio Northern University, Private University of the Year (accepted by President Daniel DiBiasio and Campus Liaison Robert Alexander)

2012 Civic Education Leadership Award

The ceremony began with the Civic Education Leadership Award, given to Marvin Kalb, American journalist and award-winning reporter for both CBS and NBC News. Mr. Kalb has spoken to large groups of TWC interns during seminars such as Inside Washington this past January. He's lectured on public policy issues and civic lessons, despite his busy schedule. TWC is honored to award Mr. Kalb with the 2012 Civic Education Leadership Award, as he is someone who truly "exemplifies the highest levels of integrity in his profession."

2012 Liaison of the Year Award

Dr. Steven Hurwitz, Professor of Psychology and Law and Criminal Justice at Tiffin University, was "humbled and honored to be named TWC's 2012 Liaison of the Year. It has been exciting to be a part of the growth of Tiffin University’s involvement over the past few years."  Brian Feeley, TWC's Managing Director of the Office of Admissions and Institutional Relations and presenter of the award, described the type of relationship that TWC has cultivated with Tiffin University as something that "doesn’t happen by accident," and is due instead to the service and dedication that liaisons like Dr. Hurwitz provide to the organization.

2012 Public University of the Year Award

Bridgewater State University has been a fantastic partner of TWC since 2000, sending students to both TWC's internship and seminar programs. Bridgewater's campus liaison, Dr. George Serra, was regarded by President Dana Mohler-Faria as "one of the most phenomenal political science professors in the nation." Dr. Serra recently wrapped up another faculty leader role with TWC during the Republic National Convention, as a part of the Campaign 2012 series, in Tampa, Florida. TWC is ecstatic to award Bridgewater State University with the 2012 Public University of the Year.

2012 Private University of the Year Award

To conclude the Academic Affairs portion of the luncheon, Michael B. Smith, TWC's President, honored his alma mater, Ohio Northern University, with TWC's 2012 Private University of the Year award. President Daniel DiBiasio, after accepting the award, commented that "for students to be civically engaged, they need to have great role models. And that is one of the main components that TWC hopes to provide each and every ONU student and every other student that completes an internship or academic seminar program with."

Reflections of TWC's 2012 Academic Affairs awardees included:

"There is a direct link between education, free press and free society that both journalists have to keep in mind. Without a free press, you can't live in a free society."

Marvin Kalb-Civic Education Leadership Awardee

"One of my current students commented that I have always been passionate about The Washington Center. I told him that it is easy to be passionate about a program that changes student’s lives. But this award really belongs to Tiffin University as a whole.  From the President and other members of the administration who make the logistics as seamless as possible to my colleagues who open their classrooms during recruiting visits to the TWC alums who return to campus as great ambassadors, there is total institutional support for this program at Tiffin University"

Steven Hurwitz-Liaison of the Year
