Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-TN) opened his doors to two TWC students on Thursday, April 11th. Rep. Fincher, who represents Tennessee's 8th District, sat down with the students in his office in the Longworth House Office Building for a public policy discussion covering topics such as immigration, healthcare, and education funding (specifically, government-backed student loans).

They also discussed farm subsidies, a subject important to Rep. Fincher. Not only is his district comprised mostly of small communities and farms, but Rep. Fincher himself is a managing partner is his family farm holdings, where he helps to manage over 2,500 acres of cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat.

Monmouth University student Kelsey Currie felt the meeting was successful. Kelsey said that she "really appreciated hearing Congressman Stephen Lee Fincher's take on some of the issues facing Congress and America today. Though we may not share the same ideology, his concern for his constituents was evident, and he expressed some of the difficulties he faces in working to achieve the best legal outcomes for our nation. I admire his dedication to his work, and I am grateful that he was willing to take time out of his very busy schedule to address some of my concerns." Similarly, Whitney Flatt of Middle Tennessee State University said that, "Going to the Hill was an eye-opening and empowering experience. The visit with my congressman showed me how easy the process of civic engagement can be, as well as the importance of having my voice heard."

Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill (PPDCH), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
