Summer interns kicked off their third week of internships with Career Boot Camp, held at the National Association of Home Builders. Students raved about the relevant and actionable keynote presentation given by Dave Uejio, Lead for Talent Acquisition at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

After receiving his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Uejio worked in the fast-paced technology world at a startup for five years. But when September 11th happened, Uejio began asking himself "what can I do better?" He eventually moved on to earn his Masters in Public Policy at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and then earned a spot as a Presidential Management Fellow, working on human capital strategy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Throughout his career, Uejio spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to develop talent and realized that he hadn't seen a lot of innovation in the last five decades in areas related to professional development. During the Career Boot Camp, he delved into key competencies necessary for new professionals to become 21st century leaders, brand themselves and position themselves as experts in their fields.

Three Competencies New Professionals Need to Possess in the 21st Century

  1. Ideation: the ability to generate innovative solutions to problems
  2. Execution: the drive to bring ideas to fruition
  3. Collaboration: how the value of your relationships impacts problem solving

The talk wrapped up with a Q&A session where students asked Uejio about networking, interviewing and making a standout first impression. Following the keynote address, summer interns attended two workshops of their choice at several nearby locations.
