The Washington Center named its most outstanding internship site supervisor and celebrated dozens of other influential mentors at an awards breakfast at the Residential and Academic Facility on Thursday, April 20. Tom Netting, a public policy advisor for Akerman LLP, received top honors after being nominated by Brianna Golden, an intern from Monmouth University in New Jersey.

“In every meeting that we attended, Mr. Netting made sure to introduce me and pull out a chair for me to sit at the table with everyone,” Golden wrote of their interactions with members of Congress and their staffs. “He may have thought this to be a small gesture, but this made a tremendous impact on me.”

Internship site supervisors play important roles in TWC’s educational structure and pledge to uphold the organization’s Internship Bill of Rights, established in 2014. The guidelines empower interns to get the most from their internships through reflection on their professional plans before their work even begins. They also give internship sites and supervisors the tools they need to measure the effectiveness of their internship programs.

In his remarks, TWC President Chris Norton congratulated the more than 50 internship site supervisors who were nominated by spring 2017 students. He reflected on the historic importance of the mentor/mentee relationship, from the origin of the word in Ancient Greek lore to its application today.

“There is no more powerful of a partnership than that of a mentor and a mentee,” Norton said. “What you’re doing with these young students is like a ripple in a big lake: the ripple keeps on going and affects their entire lives. The momentum keeps going.”

TWC is grateful to the hundreds of internship sites and supervisors whose dedication made this semester so successful – especially the individuals whom students nominated for the spring
