On Thursday, November 7th, Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse met with TWC students in the Hart Senate Office Building to discuss public policy, current issues, and more. Senator Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 2007. The students, who attend Lynchburg College, Anna Maria College, and the University of Rhode Island were able to sit down in the Senator's office and discuss the issues that matter to them, including:

  • Natural parks in Rhode Island
  • Education
  • Human trafficking
  • The government shutdown

For the students, this visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level.

Students who participated in this visit included:

Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill (PPDCH), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district.
