On Tuesday, September 23rd, students from the Michigan, participating in our academic internship program, travelled to Capitol Hill to meet Senator Debbie Stabenow in her Hart Senate Office Building suite. Senator Stabenow, a Democrat, occasionally holds morning coffee hours where she meets with fellow Michiganders and discusses pressing matters relating to Michigan. The students, who attend Central Michigan University and the University of Tampa, were able to speak to Senator Stabenow on issues important to them, such as:

  • Wind energy and energy independence
  • Student loan interest rates
  • Education issues

This visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one conversation with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level. It also gives our students a chance to understand how the legislative process is conducted, as well as the daily business of a Member of Congress.

Students who participated in this visit included:

Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill (PPDCH), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
