Two Massachusetts students, Geoff Steber and Jordan Benson, travelled to Capitol Hill to meet their hometown Member of Congress, Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Bill Keating. Rep. Keating represents eastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The students, who attend the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Bentley University, spoke Member of Congress about:

  • Wind energy on Cape Cod
  • The day-to-day experiences of a Congressman
  • The government shutdown

When asked about the visit, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth student Jordan Benson said "...though I knew a little about my congressman beforehand, meeting Rep. Keating in person was informative and eye-opening for me; overall, I was impressed. He was able to take twenty minutes out of his schedule to speak frankly with us about anything we asked him, and I never got the feeling that he was holding anything back. Talking to my congressman off-the-record was a reminder that at least some politicians are still in touch with their constituents and aren't ideologically bound to mainstream party viewpoints." Geoff Steber agreed, saying "I enjoyed getting to speak to the Congressman who represents me in government about relevant issues in an informal and personal manner. I felt very connected to the political process, and it was a great experience overall."

For the students, this visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level.

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
