Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat from Maine, welcomed her TWC constituents on Wednesday, February 26th. Rep. Pingree represents Maine's 1st District, which encompasses southern Maine and the cities of Portland and Augusta. The students, who attend the University of New Hampshire and Stonehill College, were able to speak with Rep. Pingree and her staff about issues of importance, including:

  • Small business policy
  • Jobs in Maine
  • Environmental policy

When asked about the visit, University of New Hampshire student Lauren Nawfel said, "Meeting with Representative Pingree was a wonderful and rewarding experience. It was exciting to be invited into her office and to have the chance to speak with her. Setting aside time to meet with students even though she is extremely busy shows that she cares about her constituents' interests. She was very pleasant and seemed genuinely happy to have us there. I really enjoyed the meeting, as the opportunity to speak with a Member of Congress and have his or her undivided attention is an opportunity that is few and far between."

For the students, this visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level.

Students who participated in this visit included:

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
