Hundreds of participants arrived for week one of the Inside Washington Academic Seminar just in time for the beginning of the campaign 2016 primary season.

The seminar seeks to address the campaign climate in two parts: Week one of the seminar, “Pursuit of the Presidency,” analyzes the issues and trends that will influence voters choices in the upcoming election. Part two of the seminar, “Politics and the Media,” gives students an insider’s perspective on what it’s like to cover a campaign and how the media will play a role in relaying information to voters.

Week one faculty director was Dr. Meena Bose, director of the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. Week one speakers included:

Howard Dean, former Vermont Governor

Grover Norquist, president, Americans for Tax Reform

Jessica O’Connell, executive director, Emily’s List

Charlie Cook, editor and publisher, Cook Political Report

Frank Spring, political director, Truman National Security Project

Sean Spicer, communications director, Republican National Committee

Dan Glickman, senior fellow, Bipartisan Policy Center

Following each morning portion of the seminar, students took part in site visits and tours of the city including a full tour of Capitol Hill and a D.C. bus tour.
