TWC students attending Wake Forest University and Florida Gulf Coast University had the chance to speak to their member of Congress, Gus Bilirakis. Rep. Bilirakis, a Florida Republican, represents the 12th District and sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is the vice-chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Rep. Bilirakis is in his fourth term in Congress.

The students discussed various issues, including veterans issues (an important consideration for Floridians, as Florida is home to the third highest concentration of veterans in the country) as well as his entry into the legal profession and any advice he may have for the students in that realm. "Meeting with Rep. Bilirakis was just as informative as it was exciting; I was able to actively engage in a conversation with [Rep. Bilirakis] and was and I even got advice about my future plans after law school!" said Galli Meyer, a student at Florida Gulf Coast University. The Congressman and his staff also discussed their experiences in Washington, and fielded questions from the students about ways to stay involved in the legislative process. "I was so thrilled that The Washington Center was able to give me an opportunity to meet with my Congressman," said Wake Forest University student Kelsey Sierra. "I enjoyed our discussion and was able to learn more about how he is helping our community."

This visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level. The students in attendance were:

  • Galli Meyer (Florida Gulf Coast University)
  • Kelsey Sierra (Wake Forest University)

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provides students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
