On Wednesday, March 5th, students from Furman University and the University of South Florida met Rep. Dennis A. Ross in his Cannon House Office Building. Rep. Ross represents Florida's 15th congressional district, which encompasses Lakeland and some of the Tampa suburbs.

The students had the chance to discuss their time in Washington with the Congressman as well as certain issues important to them, such as:

  • Immigration policy
  • Jobs and the economy
  • The daily life of a Member of Congress

When asked about the visit, University of South Florida student Aaron Cronk said, "We were able to ask tough questions, which he answered directly and honestly. He was very personable and passionate about his policies. Even though we don't agree on all political issues, it was a refreshing, positive experience to speak with him and know that there are representatives working to improve the country's current situation."

For the students, this visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level.

Students who participated in this visit included:

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
