Florida International University graduate and TWC spring 2014 intern Piero Sarmentio Alosilla had the chance to meet his hometown Member of Congress, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, in her Rayburn House Office Building suite. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican and former Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, represents Florida's 27th District - one that encompasses most of Miami and Coral Gables.

Piero and Rep. Ros-Lehtinen discussed immigration policy, a topic important to both. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen, a native of Cuba, immigrated to the United States at a young age and is very active in foreign affairs. Piero is working to obtain his citizenship in the United States. For Piero, this visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level.

Students who participated in this visit included:

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provides students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
