After 15 weeks of grueling internships students finished out the semester on Friday Dec. 11 as the fall 2015 cohort commenced.

Following opening remarks by student speaker Alec Slaney, a student from the University of Washington - Seattle who interned with Office of Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), several students were recognized for their achievements this semester with an award presentation:

Academic Excellence – Inarú Meléndez Vázquez – Córdova y Fernós Program

Civic Engagement – Tom Somrack – Politics and Public Policy Program

Emerging Leadership – Hannah Maes – Politics and Public Policy Program

Global Citizenship – Barrett Goodwin – Politics and Public Policy Program

Innovation – Saxby-Rose Macalister – Advocacy, Service and Arts Program

Professional Growth – Jean Yi Yoon – Prudential Foundation Global Citizens Program

Alumnus Jackson Toof ‘98, a partner at Arent Fox Attorneys at Law, served as this semester’s alumni speaker. Toof spoke about how he has defined success post-TWC and how it helped him find satisfaction beyond solely his career.

“All of you will go off and make great careers for yourself. But, it’s important for you to be successful outside of your careers as well. Success can just be confined inside of the office, you have to try and find success and happiness within yourself, your family, your community. That’s where it really counts,” said Toof.

Vinicius Gonzalez, a student from Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo who interned with the Democratic National Committee, closed out commencement. Gonzalez encouraged his fellow interns not to let their service to the common good stop at TWC.

“We all have different skills, different values that we can use to change the world, but it’s up to each of us to find out how to use these assets to better society,” Gonzalez said.

The final highlight of the semester was a student made video showing a “day in the life of a TWC intern,” produced by Rija Khan, a student from Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, Pakistan who interned with the American Legislative Exchange Council this semester.
